Manufacturer shipping software buys carrier labels for the orders a plant sends by parcel: spare parts, samples, and small orders. GoatLabels rate-shops USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL on each carton from one account, takes orders by CSV export or REST API, and costs $0 a month on Free or $40 flat on Pro. It is parcel only: no LTL, freight, or hazmat service.
USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL quoted together on each part, sample, or small order that leaves the plant, from one account.
Every label debits the quoted amount to a dated ledger entry that carries your sales order, RMA, or work order reference.
A plant usually has a freight process for pallets and nothing settled for cartons. The parcel side is handled one of four ways: a label service such as GoatLabels, each carrier's own website or shipping tool, a subscription shipping platform, or an enterprise multi-carrier or freight system. The table shows what each route asks of a shipping desk and where it stops.

| GoatLabels | Carrier websites and shipping tools | Subscription shipping platform | Enterprise multi-carrier or freight system | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How orders get in | A CSV export from the ERP, up to 500 rows per file, or a REST API call when the order is released. | Typed or pasted per shipment, one carrier site at a time. Batch tools vary by carrier. | Store and marketplace sync, file import, or API, depending on the plan. | Integrated with the ERP by the vendor or a partner as a project. |
| Carrier accounts | None to open. Labels are bought on GoatLabels' accounts; your own negotiated rates cannot be added. | One account per carrier, each with its own login and invoice. | Usually your own accounts, plus the platform's rates where offered. | Your own carrier contracts, often across modes and regions. |
| Rate comparison | USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL quoted on every parcel, one all-in number each. | None across carriers. You compare by checking each site. | Yes, across the accounts you connect. | Yes, usually rule-based across contracted carriers. |
| Pallets, LTL, and hazmat | Not offered. Parcel only, with no hazmat or regulated-goods service. | Freight is a separate product. UPS states it accepts hazardous materials on a contract basis only. | Varies by vendor. Check the plan page before assuming freight is covered. | Typically covers parcel and freight in one system. |
| Cost per order | A dated ledger line per label carrying your reference. Re-weigh adjustments post to the same ledger. | A separate invoice or statement per carrier to match to orders. | Reports inside the platform, plus your carrier invoices. | Freight audit and allocation, set up during implementation. |
| Price and commitment | Free $0 a month with 50 shipments, or Pro $40 a month flat with unlimited shipments. No contract. | No software fee. Rates depend on your account with each carrier. | A monthly subscription, often tiered by volume or users. | Quoted by sales, typically with implementation fees. |

Manufacturer shipping software turns a released order into a carrier label, picks the carrier and service, and records what the shipment cost. For most plants the term covers two different jobs: booking freight for pallets, and labeling the cartons that go by parcel. They are often handled by different tools and different people.
GoatLabels does the parcel job only. It is built for the steady stream of small shipments that sits beside production freight: a replacement part for a customer whose line is down, a sample for a prospect, a warranty return, a small reorder that does not fill a pallet. Searches for manufacturing shipping software, parcel shipping software for manufacturers, or spare parts shipping software describe that same parcel job.
Cartons within the carriers' parcel limits can go by parcel, and those limits differ by carrier and service. USPS Priority Mail, for example, has a maximum weight of 70 lbs and a maximum combined length and girth of 108 inches. A dense casting or a long extrusion can pass one carrier's limit and fail another's.
Size and weight also change the price before a carton reaches the limit. UPS lists Additional Handling criteria that include a longest side exceeding 48 inches or a second-longest side exceeding 30 inches, and applies it automatically to packages with an actual weight of more than 50 pounds. Quoting four carriers per carton shows which one treats your box most kindly.
Orders reach GoatLabels by a CSV export or by a REST API call, because it has no native ERP connector. The export route is a file of ready-to-ship orders from a report or saved view, imported at up to 500 rows per file. Errors name the row and field, and one bad row does not fail the batch, so a run of manufacturer shipping labels is not held up by one bad address.
The API route suits plants with a developer or an integrator on hand. A script calls the API when the order is released, reads the four quotes, and buys the label. Calls are unlimited on every plan, with test keys and Idempotency-Key support. Tracking returns on signed webhooks; nothing is written back into the ERP automatically.
Each label writes a dated ledger entry that carries the reference you sent with the shipment, so cost can be grouped by sales order, RMA, work order, or customer. Labels are paid from a prepaid wallet, which means the ledger is the full record and there is no carrier invoice to match line by line.
An order that ships in several cartons produces several labels, each its own ledger line with the same reference. If a carrier re-weighs a carton, the adjustment posts to the same ledger. Finance exports the ledger and posts it to the books; GoatLabels does not do the posting for you.
It is the wrong choice if most of your volume moves on pallets, because GoatLabels does not quote, book, or document LTL or freight. It also offers no hazmat or regulated-goods service, no retailer compliance labels such as GS1-128, no EDI documents, and no way to use your own negotiated carrier rates.
Plants that need parcel and freight in one screen, a vendor-supported ERP connector, SSO, or a contractual SLA should look at an enterprise multi-carrier system. GoatLabels fits when the parcel side is a real but secondary workload and the team wants four carriers quoted without opening four accounts.

When a parts order is released, a script can send the ship-to, cartons, and weights to the REST API, compare four carriers, and buy the label. Every plan has unlimited calls, live and test keys, Idempotency-Key support, signed replayable webhooks, and rate-limit headers. PrintNode auto-print can send the label to the printer at the shipping desk.
