Shipping software without an annual contract

Pay for labels, not a term.

Shipping software without an annual contract bills you for labels, not a term. GoatLabels has no contract: Free is $0 a month with 50 shipments, Pro is a flat $40 a month with unlimited shipments, and every label is paid from a prepaid wallet, with USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL rate-shopped on each parcel.

Four carriers on every parcel

What does an annual shipping software contract commit you to?

An annual contract commits you to a plan price for twelve months, whatever your volume does in that time. For subscription tools it is usually a billing choice: ShipStation and Shippo both sell month to month and discount annual billing. For quote-priced platforms it is how the product is sold: ProShip publishes no price and routes buyers to a discovery call, and EasyPost prices its Enterprise plan by volume. A contract makes sense when it buys something you need, such as SSO, an SLA, freight or your own negotiated carrier rates. When it only buys a lower monthly price, the risk is paying for a year of volume you may not ship.

Contract vs pay as you go, side by side

How do annual, monthly and pay-as-you-go compare?

They differ in who carries the volume risk: an annual contract puts it on you, a monthly plan splits it, and pay as you go puts it on the label. The first two columns describe common patterns, not any one vendor.

Annual contractMonthly subscriptionGoatLabels, pay as you go
What you commit toA plan price and term for a year, usually agreed with sales or billed upfront.A plan fee each month, sized to a shipment tier, until you cancel.Nothing up front. Free is $0 a month with 50 shipments; Pro is a flat $40 a month with unlimited shipments. No contract.
A quiet monthYou pay the contracted amount whether or not parcels ship. You pay the tier fee, plus labels. You pay for the labels you print. On Free there is no plan fee at all.
A peak monthCovered if the contract was sized for it; overage terms apply if not.Crossing a shipment tier can move you to a higher plan fee.Pro has no shipment cap, so a peak changes the label spend, not the plan.
How labels are paidOften invoiced after the fact, then audited against what was quoted.Varies by vendor: card on file, carrier account, or invoice. From a prepaid wallet (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, ACH, crypto). Each label debits the quoted amount to a dated ledger entry with your reference.
LeavingTied to the renewal date and any notice terms in the contract.Cancel at the end of a billing cycle, per the vendor's terms. No contract to exit. Stop funding the wallet.
What a contract can buy youSSO, SLAs, negotiated carrier rates, freight, ERP modules, a named account manager, depending on the vendor.Usually some of those on the top tier.None of those at GoatLabels. See the limits section below before you compare prices.

Which shipping platforms require a contract?

Few publish a mandatory annual term; the commitment shows up as annual billing discounts or quote-only enterprise plans. Here is what each vendor's own pricing page said on 2026-09-26. Follow the source link for the current wording.

PlatformPlans and commitment termsSource
ShipStationMonthly plans from $14.99 (Starter), $29.99 (Standard) and $349.99 (Premium) at the lowest shipment tier, rising with volume. Annual billing is offered at a discount, and the page says "Cancel anytime".shipstation.com/pricing
ShippoFree Starter plan; Pro billed month to month or annually at a discount; Premier priced by contacting sales. The page says "You can cancel or change your plan at any time."goshippo.com/pricing
EasyPostFree up to 3,000 labels, then per-label fees; bring-your-own carrier accounts at $20 a month; an Enterprise plan with "custom pricing based on volume".easypost.com/pricing
ProShipNo public price list. The pricing link leads to a discovery call booking with a ProShip shipping expert.proshipinc.com/pricing

When is a contract the better deal?

A contract is the better deal when it buys a requirement GoatLabels does not meet. Check this list before you compare a single rate:

  • You already hold negotiated UPS or FedEx rates. GoatLabels cannot import them; rates come from its own carrier accounts. If yours beat a GoatLabels quote on the same parcels, keep them.
  • Your security or procurement checklist requires SSO, a signed SLA or a dedicated account manager. GoatLabels offers none of those; support is email plus the in-app assistant.
  • You ship pallets. GoatLabels is parcel only, with no LTL or freight.
  • You need per-client sub-accounts or white-label billing. GoatLabels has one account and one wallet; per-client cost is a ledger export filtered by your reference.
  • You need a native SAP, NetSuite or Oracle module. GoatLabels connects through its REST API or a CSV export instead.

How does pay as you go hold up at high volume?

It holds up because the plan fee stops moving with volume: Pro is a flat $40 a month with unlimited shipments, so a peak month changes the label spend and nothing else. The same inputs a contract platform offers are there on both plans:

  • USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL rate-shopped on every parcel from one account, one all-in number each.
  • Bulk CSV import up to 500 rows; errors name the row and field, and one bad row does not fail the batch.
  • 13 store connectors, including Shopify, Amazon, Walmart, TikTok Shop and Magento, feeding one queue.
  • REST API with unlimited calls on every plan: live and test keys, Idempotency-Key, signed replayable webhooks, OpenAPI 3.1.
  • PrintNode auto-print at the pack station. US and Singapore origins.

Shipping software without an annual contract: FAQ

Is there shipping software without an annual contract?
Yes. GoatLabels has no contract at all: Free is $0 a month with 50 shipments, and Pro is a flat $40 a month with unlimited shipments. Labels are paid from a prepaid wallet as you print them. Several subscription tools, such as ShipStation and Shippo, also sell month to month and offer annual billing as a discount.
Is an annual shipping software contract cheaper than paying monthly?
Only if your volume holds for the whole year. Annual billing is usually discounted against the monthly price, but you pay it whether or not parcels ship, and a contract sized for peak overpays in quiet months. Compare the annual total against twelve real months of your own volume, not your best month.
What do you give up without an enterprise contract?
At GoatLabels you give up SSO, SLAs, sub-accounts, a dedicated account manager, negotiated or bring-your-own carrier rates, LTL freight and native ERP modules. If any of those is a hard requirement, a contract-based platform is the right choice. If not, you keep four carriers, bulk CSV, 13 store connectors and a REST API.
How does a high-volume team pay for labels without a contract?
From a prepaid wallet funded by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, ACH or crypto. Each label debits the quoted amount to a dated ledger entry carrying your reference, so finance reconciles against the ledger instead of auditing a carrier invoice at month end. Carrier adjustments post as their own records.
Can I cancel GoatLabels Pro?
Yes. There is no contract or minimum term to work out. The pricing page covers how cancelling Pro works, and the Free plan stays available at $0 a month with 50 shipments.
Can I talk to someone before switching?
Yes. Email contact@goatlabels.io with your monthly volume and carriers, and a person replies with USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL rates on your real lanes and an honest read on fit. Nothing to sign afterwards.
