Shipping API comparison: EasyPost, Shippo, ShipStation API, GoatLabels

Pricing, carriers, and retries, side by side.

A shipping API comparison should weigh billing, metered calls, carriers, and carrier accounts. EasyPost and Shippo add per-label fees past a free allowance and ShipStation API sells label-count plans; GoatLabels charges $0 Free or $40 Pro flat, with unlimited calls and USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL from one prepaid wallet.

What should a shipping API comparison cover?

A shipping API comparison should cover six things: how labels are billed, whether non-purchase calls are metered, which carriers you get, whether you must bring carrier accounts, what the enterprise tier includes, and how safely the API handles retries. Feature lists look alike across vendors; these six are where the bill and the on-call pager differ.

Billing model

Is the label fee per label, a monthly plan sized by label count, or a flat plan? Model your worst month, not your average one.

Metered calls

Does rating, tracking, or address validation cost money per call? A cart that re-quotes on every address edit multiplies that meter.

Carrier coverage

Count the carriers you actually use. Four carriers rate-shopped cover most US parcel lanes; a regional carrier outside them decides the question alone.

Carrier accounts

If you have negotiated UPS or FedEx rates you must keep, you need an API that accepts your own accounts. If you do not, provided rates remove an onboarding step.

Retry safety

A timeout on label purchase must not buy a second label. Check for an idempotency key, and check how webhooks are signed and replayed.

What happens off the API

Operations still handles exceptions. Check whether a dashboard, CSV import, and store connectors spend the same balance as the API.

How do EasyPost, Shippo, ShipStation API, and GoatLabels compare?

They differ most on billing: EasyPost and Shippo add a per-label fee after a free allowance, ShipStation API (formerly ShipEngine) sells plans sized by label count, and GoatLabels charges a flat plan with unlimited calls. The others win on carrier breadth and on accepting your own carrier accounts.

Which shipping API fits a high-volume or B2B team?

A high-volume or B2B team usually fits whichever API keeps the per-label cost flat as volume grows while still covering its carriers. At a few thousand labels a month, a per-label platform fee is small; at tens of thousands it becomes a line item finance asks about. GoatLabels Pro is $40 a month flat with unlimited shipments and unlimited calls, and every label lands on a dated ledger entry carrying your reference, so cost per client or per channel is an export you filter.

The same wallet backs the dashboard, bulk CSV import (up to 500 rows, with errors named by row and field), and 13 store connectors. That matters when operations has to ship orders your integration never saw. For 3PL and warehouse teams the fuller picture is on shipping software for 3PLs and high-volume labels without a subscription.

When is another shipping API the better choice?

Another shipping API is the better choice when you need carriers, account types, or enterprise terms that GoatLabels does not offer. Say so early and save both sides a trial:

  • You need a carrier outside USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL. EasyPost and ShipStation API each list 100+ carriers and Shippo lists 40+.
  • You must run negotiated carrier contracts through the API. GoatLabels does not accept your own carrier accounts; EasyPost's BYOCA plan and ShipStation API Advanced do.
  • Procurement requires an SLA, SSO, sub-accounts per client, or a named account manager. GoatLabels offers none of these today.
  • You ship pallets. GoatLabels is parcel only, with no LTL or freight.

Create the shipment, compare USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL rates, and buy the label with one Bearer header. Send an Idempotency-Key and a retried purchase returns the original label. The dashboard and the API buy from the same prepaid balance.

Shipping API comparison FAQ

What is the best shipping API for a high-volume team?
The best shipping API for a high-volume team is the one whose billing still makes sense in your peak month and whose carriers cover your lanes. Per-label platform fees scale with volume, while a flat plan does not. GoatLabels Pro is $40 a month flat with unlimited shipments across USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL; if you need 100+ carriers or your own carrier accounts, EasyPost or ShipStation API fit better.
How much does a shipping API cost per label in 2026?
As checked on 2026-09-26: EasyPost charges $0.08 per label after 3,000 free wallet labels a month, Shippo API Starter charges 7 cents per label after 30 free, and ShipStation API Advanced starts at $75 a month for 1,000 labels. GoatLabels adds no per-label platform fee: Free is $0 a month for 50 shipments and Pro is $40 a month flat, with postage debited from a prepaid wallet.
Do I need my own carrier accounts to use a shipping API?
No, most shipping APIs can return rates from provided accounts, and GoatLabels only works that way. USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL rates come back on the first call with nothing to provision. If you must keep negotiated contracts, choose an API that accepts your own accounts, such as EasyPost's BYOCA plan or ShipStation API Advanced.
Are API calls metered on top of labels?
Sometimes. Shippo's API Starter lists fees per rate generation, per tracking request, and per address validation, while ShipStation API Advanced includes those calls. GoatLabels does not meter calls on any plan, so quoting, re-quoting, and tracking reads cost nothing beyond the labels you buy.
Does GoatLabels offer an enterprise plan with an SLA or SSO?
No. GoatLabels has no SLA, no SSO, no sub-accounts, no negotiated volume contracts, and no dedicated account manager. It sells to high-volume teams on two plans, Free and Pro at $40 a month flat, with support by email and the in-app assistant. If your procurement requires those items, an enterprise tier elsewhere is the right call.
How do I compare shipping APIs before switching?
Run last month's shipments through each candidate and compare the all-in label cost, the calls your integration makes per order, and how retries behave. GoatLabels test keys work in CI, an Idempotency-Key header stops a retried purchase from buying twice, and the OpenAPI 3.1 spec lets you generate a client to test against before you move traffic.
