A ShipEngine alternative for small teams

A queue, not a metering plan.

GoatLabels is a ShipEngine alternative for small teams: a shared To Ship queue, USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL quoted side by side, and pay-as-you-go labels from a prepaid wallet with no monthly fee and no API plan to size first.

What does a small team need from a ShipEngine alternative?

For a small team, GoatLabels replaces ShipEngine's metered API plan with a shared To Ship queue, four carriers quoted side by side, and pay-as-you-go labels from a prepaid wallet with no monthly fee. ShipEngine is a strong API for engineering-led companies; this page is about the teams that never wanted to write the integration.

Why do small teams leave ShipEngine?

You are a team, not an engineering org

ShipEngine assumes a developer will wire it up and stay on call for it. A three-person shop does not have that person. GoatLabels puts every order in one To Ship queue that the whole team can print from, and keeps the REST API available for the day you do want to script something.

A metering plan is a forecast you have to get right

Sizing an API plan means guessing next quarter's volume and paying for the guess. A prepaid wallet with no monthly fee removes the forecast: fund it, print labels at the carrier rate, and the balance is the only number to watch.

Carrier onboarding is a project you did not sign up for

Bringing your own carrier accounts means negotiating, connecting, and maintaining each one. USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL are quoted side by side in GoatLabels from the first label, with nothing to connect and nothing to renew.

And when you should stay on ShipEngine

  • You have an engineer who owns the shipping integration and the metered API is already wired into your order system. Ripping that out for a queue is a step backwards.
  • Your negotiated carrier accounts carry discounts that beat what you would pay on a shared rate, and ShipEngine is where those accounts are connected.
  • You need carriers or regions outside USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL, or outside US and Singapore origins. ShipEngine's connected-account model covers more of the map.
Orders end to end

Sync the stores. Handle the rest too.

Connect any of the 13 live connectors — Shopify, WooCommerce, Amazon, eBay, TikTok Shop, Etsy, Walmart, BigCommerce, Squarespace, Wix, Square, Magento, and Temu — and orders land in one To Ship queue. Import a spreadsheet in bulk by CSV, paste a message, or drop in a screenshot, and the AI assistant drafts the recipient, the parcel, and the service for you to confirm. Every label is a pay-as-you-go debit against a prepaid wallet with no monthly fee, and the quote you accepted for USPS, UPS, FedEx, or DHL is the exact amount that leaves the balance.

Everything you had before.
Without a monthly fee.

Leaving ShipEngine should not cost you the carriers, the store sync, or the API. Those all come with you. What does not come with you is the monthly fee — and what is new is an assistant that turns a message into a drafted label.

The packing table, not the desk

A message is a valid order input.

Most tools expect the order to already exist somewhere they can read. When a buyer messages instead, you become the integration. GoatLabels takes the message itself, on the phone that is already next to the tape gun.

Paste the message or drop a screenshot — the AI assistant pulls out the buyer, the address, and the parcel.
No CSV export and no import mapping: the message is the order record.
USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL come back as four all-in prices on one screen.
Buy from the prepaid balance and auto-print via PrintNode or print from the browser.
Hold the mic at the packing table and say the address — the assistant drafts it and reads the rate back.
Hands full of packing tape

Talk to Billy, not to an import screen.

Packing is a two-hands job, and most software's answer is a form. Hold the mic, say who it is going to, and Billy looks up the buyer, rate-shops USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL, and queues the label against your prepaid balance — then answers for it afterwards when the buyer asks where the parcel is. This is the real product, not a render.

ShipEngine alternative for small teams — FAQ

Is GoatLabels a good ShipEngine alternative for a small team?
For a team without a dedicated developer, yes. ShipEngine is an excellent API, but a small team usually wants a queue to print from, not an integration to maintain. GoatLabels gives every teammate one To Ship queue, four carriers quoted side by side, and pay-as-you-go labels with no monthly fee, while the REST API stays available for later.
Do I need a developer to use GoatLabels?
No. Connect a store, import a CSV, or paste an order and the label is drafted in the dashboard. The REST label API exists for teams that want it, but nothing about the queue depends on it.
Do I need my own carrier accounts?
No. USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL are quoted side by side on every parcel with nothing to connect. If you already hold discounted carrier contracts, that is a fair reason to keep them connected in ShipEngine.
Is there a monthly fee or an API plan to choose?
Not to start. Free covers 50 shipments a month with no fee and no API plan; Pro is one flat monthly plan with unlimited shipments. The API is never metered. Labels are pay-as-you-go from a prepaid wallet. ShipEngine's own pricing page is the place to check how their current tiers are structured.
Can the whole team share one account?
Yes. The To Ship queue and the prepaid wallet are shared, so anyone on the team can rate-shop and print, and auto-print via PrintNode or the browser sends the label to whichever printer is nearest.
Can I keep ShipEngine running while I test?
Yes, and it is the sensible way to compare. Put a handful of real orders through GoatLabels alongside your current setup and compare the all-in quote with what those labels cost you today, plan included.

Comparing the APIs directly? Read the ShipEngine alternative for developers. Running more than one store? See shipping for multiple stores.

Test it on the next order that lands.

Keep the carriers and the API.
Drop the metering plan.

Fund a wallet, put the next few orders through the shared To Ship queue, and compare the all-in USPS, UPS, FedEx, and DHL quote against what a metered plan costs your team today.
